Consumer Food Safety

Foodborne illness continues to be a huge problem in this country.  The United States has one of the safest food supplies in the world, but people continue to get sick from consuming contaminated food.  The Center for Disease Control estimates that as many as 25 million people suffer from foodborne illness every year.

When people become sick with symptoms such as diarrhea, vomiting, nausea, stomach cramps, fever, etc., they sometimes assume that they have the stomach flu and this is the reason that most foodborne illnesses go unreported. Unfortunately, the problem may be a foodborne illness caused by bacteria in the food that they ate.  Symptoms can start anywhere from several minutes to several days later.

Nearly half of the foodborne illnesses occur from food being improperly handled in the home.  To prepare food that is safe to eat, you should know the most important food safety practices.

To increase your knowledge of food safety, we would like for you to take a short, seven-question food safety quiz.  Following the completion of the test, please view the short tutorial.
